The RMS Titanic, owned by the White Star Line company, was the largest and most luxurious of the transatlantic journey era. During her inugural journey between Southampton and New York, she collided with an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15, 1912. The Titanic was designed to carry 32 lifeboats but at the time of the accident only had 20 on-board, enough for only half of the passengers. Compounding the size of the tragedy, many of these boats were launched half empty.
